Egoless
Originals available for sale · sales (at) almario (dot) ca
Egoless is the surface that remains. In Égodata, visitors' portraits are projected in real time onto a field of thousands of hand-cut white squares; each detected face triggers the machine to expel one square, hollowing out the canvas passage after passage. What is left when the exhibition ends is a perforated blank: the portrait of everyone who entered, and of no one.
Each surface, produced for a presentation of Égodata and its earlier form Entropie, was destroyed by the machine over the course of an exhibition: two at Centre Bang (Saguenay, 2016), four at the Centre d'art Jacques-et-Michel-Auger (Victoriaville, 2020), six at the Centre national d'exposition (Jonquière, 2022) and four at the PHOS Festival (Matane, 2023). Sixteen productions, sixteen destructions.
Surface of more than 4,500 white squares (approx. 1.5 cm²), cut and pinned by hand on micro-perforated transparent acrylic, approx. 1.5 × 0.75 m (59 × 30 in).
Originals for sale
Sixteen originals exist, one per destroyed surface, each bearing the marks of its own destruction. After each exhibition, the surface is preserved and reassembled for framing.
