Charles Babbage

Charles Babbage (1791-1871), English mathematician, philosopher and inventor, often called the father of the computer. He conceived the Difference Engine and then the Analytical Engine, the first design for a general-purpose, programmable mechanical computer, complete with an arithmetic unit, conditional branching and memory.
Portrayed in dyforme (2016) as a large-scale photomosaic of 4,800 pictorial elements, dismantled piece by piece by a machine over the course of the exhibition.
