Zapata Ortiz, born in the municipality of Venecia (Antioquia), graduated from the Universidad de Medellín, a specialist in criminal law and criminology from the same institution, and a specialist in commercial law from the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana.

A career judge, from 1971 he served as municipal criminal judge and circuit criminal judge in the capital of Antioquia and the municipalities of Caucasia, Rionegro, Támesis, Marinilla and Envigado.

In 1990 he joined the bench of the Superior Tribunal of Medellín. He taught at the universities of Medellín, Cooperativa de Colombia, Pontificia Bolivariana, San Buenaventura and Litoral. In 2012, the year the arrest order was signed, Zapata Ortiz presided over the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia.

His portrait, a photomosaic of 4,800 images of the family's destroyed home, of the cell where the artist's father was held, and of the home at the time of the arrest, was created for déformé and destroyed by a machine over the course of the exhibition at Galerie l'OEuvre de l'Autre (Chicoutimi, 2013). One production, one destruction. Five years later, the same face returned, rebuilt in jam labels, in his Marmelade portrait.
